WSP feels like the perfect place to progress my career. We have a whole host of training and colleagues with vast expertise to draw and learn from across several sectors. There are regular knowledge shares and Continued Personal Development events to keep up with the latest technology, design standards or policy. WSP's commitment to my development extends to supporting my Pathway to Chartership, recognising the value of formal qualifications, and providing me with a nurturing mentor and a nice bonus for passing!
WSP prioritises internal training, providing a library of courses and mentorship opportunities. Learning from experienced professionals ensures I'm equipped to tackle the exciting projects they take on. The company boasts a diverse portfolio across the country! I have gained experience on numerous projects ranging from tree planting initiatives for Local Authorities to major infrastructure projects. I can work in their impressive Manchester office as well as offices nationwide. Plus, WSP offers flexible working arrangements, helping me find a work-life balance that works for me. With the chance to work on stimulating projects, receive ongoing support, and even enjoy a great office space, WSP is a fantastic place to develop my career.
For me, joining WSP was a game changer. I am given autonomy, trust, and a platform to share and nourish my passion for the many dimensions of the building industry. In my early career, I took all opportunities to learn from talented and passionate professionals, observing their vision and methodologies. It was only when I arrived at WSP that I was given the opportunity to apply my very own recipe for success. Because they trusted me, I thrived: with the support and advice of experienced landscape architects, I was given a voice; with the help of curious and creative junior landscape architects, I am empowered to lead my projects.
I first saw the potential of an integrated multidisciplinary team in tackling the unprecedented challenges of climate and biodiversity crisis. I am certain that a collaborative and inclusive approach fosters more robust and future-proof cities. I also found great people and a team spirit, making it my favourite place to work.
I participate in the WSP Net Zero think-tank, to evidence and assert the role of Landscape Architecture in Future Ready projects. I shared my research on Future Ready Streets at the WSP GTEC and more recently at UDL and the Environment Agency.
WSP is a place to grow and build a unique career path. Interested in leadership and research, I met colleagues with whom to explore new pathways. I find echoes on various topics I am passionate about and collaborate with experts across the world from disciplines I couldn’t even imagine existed.
Working at WSP is an incredibly rewarding and positively challenging experience. I arrived with a background in a small landscape design / build company and found the same sense of a close-knit team that values creativity, sustainability, and professional growth. Despite a horticultural background, I ventured into Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment which has been wonderfully engaging and valuable. The advantages of immersion in a group of passionate and talented professionals cannot be overstated, and our leadership fosters a collaborative environment where every voice is heard, and innovation encouraged. Continuous learning is a priority here, with regular workshops and training sessions that keep us ahead of industry trends. Our commitment to Future Ready practices ensures that our design and assessment work contributes to a nature-positive and eco-social world. The projects we undertake reaffirms my pride in being part of WSP and our shared vision for creating a better, more beautiful future.
WSP is a great place to develop a meaningful career engaging with professional colleagues from a wide spectrum of technical disciplines and making a difference. Even after over 25 years in the industry, new and challenging projects that I have never worked on before still land in my inbox. This is an illustration of the company’s global reach. Since joining I have helped to grow the UK Landscape & Urban Design Team and took on the leadership role in 2023. I am extremely proud of our talented and dedicated team of over 120 people – we have a really bright future.
I am a highly motivated, strategic and innovative thinker with a strong track record of delivering sustainable places and infrastructure. I value interdisciplinary working and collaboration with our co-professionals and stakeholders to achieve creative, sustainable outcomes with multiple benefits. In a rapidly changing world, we need to be agile and creative in our thinking and practise to make the best possible contribution to the global challenges we face for society and the environment. I am an advocate for an approach to landscape architecture and urban design that embraces designing for all life and regenerative design to address issues of climate change, the biodiversity crisis and adaptation as well as promoting active travel, health, wellbeing and social equity.
Upon joining, I was happy to learn of WSP VIBE, a LGBTQI+ community that provides visibility and support. I volunteered for the role of VIBE rep within my office. I’m proud that WSP values, embraces and celebrates diversity.
In my Midlands Regional Lead role I lead and manage 26 people, alongside managing large complex multi-disciplinary projects. My days are full, diverse, enjoyable, and challenging. I have incredible support around me and am in awe of the skills, knowledge and attitude of my team.
I look forward to helping others build their careers, supporting our clients to meet their aspirations and taking an active role in improving our Environment.
The skillsets of a landscape architect are varied. And there is no better place to utilise those skills than at WSP where the scope of work is extensive.
I began my journey as a landscape architect working on numerous projects from university campuses to designing Center Parcs’, assessing developments in sensitive landscapes to characterising National Parks. To say it has been varied is an understatement.
Consistent with all the projects I’ve worked on, has been the ability to anchor together a number of technical disciplines related to the environmental sectors and beyond, to understand their interfaces and implications of change. Landscape has been able to lead.
This in turn has led me to the career I have today – working on large scale infrastructure projects as an environmental project manager and design manager, but still very much wearing my landscape architecture hat! The opportunities offered to interact with a breadth of environmental services and understand the intricacies of the technical disciplines results in no two days ever being the same, which maintain my interests and passions. Coupled with building great collaborative relationships, this is why it’s the job for me!
I have a multi-disciplinary background in landscape and arboriculture so relished the opportunity to work with the other in-house environmental and engineering teams on a diverse range of projects and work stages, across the UK. This collaborative approach has provided excellent opportunities for professional development, learning, knowledge sharing through live project delivery. The multi-disciplinary approach is particularly well suited to support the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) as a legal requirement for new development. I have found the challenges and opportunities of BNG delivery particularly rewarding since this encourages real environmental and engineering collaboration to deliver a quantifiable end goal.
The type and scale of projects WSP deliver allow me to explore the bigger issues affecting society and the environment. It has been great to actively consider long term climate change and resilience into the schemes we are working on and strategic advice to our clients. When the future climate of London in 2050 might be similar to present-day Barcelona – how do we plan for trees, woodlands and habitats that will need to thrive in the climate of 2050, 2150, 2250 and beyond?
My accrued technical knowledge and experience gained through project delivery has allowed me to actively contribute to the development of industry best practice, to the wider benefit of the profession, including BNG, biosecurity and tree survey and assessment. It has been particularly rewarding to give something back to the profession.
I joined WSP as a Senior Landscape Architect in the India team with 9 years of experience in the capacity of team lead working closely with the UK region. WSP has allowed me to grow by helping me not only to upskill technically through a diverse range of projects but as a people’s manager adding hugely to my skillset. I have had the amazing opportunity to grow the team from 5 landscape architects to 17 members in a short span of 2 years with future expansion of the team in the pipeline. I have been promoted to Principal Landscape Architect recognising the contributions of my work within the company making me feel more fulfilled.
The work culture at WSP is supportive with a healthy work-life balance. Support comes in all forms from all colleagues be it senior or junior reflecting the positive culture established within WSP. I have been supported in undertaking the journey on the Pathway to Chartership with the aim of becoming a Chartered Landscape Architect with the LI, UK. Ideas are welcome, career progressions are discussed and working independently is encouraged. Interactions with senior leadership across the globe has helped me foster better collaboration between our teams and to cross sell our services for a better output beneficial to the client. The thing I have appreciated the most about being at WSP is that we can have a voice that is heard, and I am excited to see how I can grow further with the company.
I am excited to be developing WSP’s global landscape advisory offer, aimed at amplifying the strategic impact of design and nature intervention can have for the benefit of the planet and society. Shaping our Future Ready Landscapes approach and exploring how we finance nature in cities led me to this destination. Our approach is underpinned by a regenerative design and designing for all life to reshape our built and natural environment. We are pushing beyond the traditional boundaries of landscape and urban design, integrating perspectives from across natural capital, nature-based solution, nature restoration, stewardship models, green finance and social value with a focus legacy.
Prior to this, my role was head of discipline where I spearheaded and grew WSP’s landscape and urban design UK team for 8 years from 15 to over 120 staff, winning and working on high-profile projects like HS2 Old Oak Common station, Leeds Public Transport Investment Programme, Barking Riverside, the refurbishment of Portobello Road and the international competition Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes. I have been a community-led advocate since the award-winning Salisbury Row Streets for People project which has shaped co-design strategies ever since.
I’ve shaped and collaborated with our teams on a broad range of thought leadership including our Biodiversity in the City, Neurodiversity and Gender white papers as well as and our “What if cities were more like forests?”. I am active sharing my knowledge through public speaking, panel conversations, mentoring, lecturing and recording podcasts like URBCast and What’s That Green?
